Stay Safe While Talking to Strangers Online

Talking to someone new is half the fun of Stranger Talk. Staying in control of what you share is the other half. These are the habits we'd tell a friend before their first chat.

1. Adults only

Stranger Talk is for people 18 and over. Don't let anyone younger use your account, and don't help someone get around the age check.

2. Start general, share slowly

A stranger doesn't need your full name, address, college, office or daily routine. Talk about music, movies, your city or your day first. Small details add up fast: your name plus your area plus your workplace can point straight to you.

3. Never share these

  • passwords or recovery codes
  • OTPs, verification codes or your Stranger Talk PIN
  • bank, card or UPI details
  • Aadhaar, PAN or any ID document
  • your home or office address
  • your live location, train coach or seat number

If anyone says they need your PIN or an OTP to "verify" you, that's a scam. End the chat.

4. Be careful with links

Don't open links from people you just met. They can lead to fake login pages, malware or "you won a prize" scams. Never type your PIN or bank details into a page because a chat partner told you to.

5. Spot scams early

Watch out if someone quickly brings up money: a loan, gift cards, crypto, an investment tip, tickets or an "emergency". A sad or convincing story isn't proof. Never send money to someone you met on a chat site.

6. People can pretend

Names, photos, Instagram handles and stories can all be fake. Someone claiming to be a celebrity, a company employee or an official is still just a stranger until you know otherwise.

7. Pressure, harassment and threats

You never have to keep talking if something feels off. Leave, block and report anyone who pushes you for photos, sexual content, personal details, a meetup or money. If someone threatens you, don't argue back. Leave, block, report, and call local emergency services or someone you trust if you feel in danger.

8. Safety tips for each mode

Random Chat: you don't know who's on the other side, so keep the first chat light. Tap Next or Leave whenever you want.

Private Chat: share the 6-digit code only with the person you mean to invite. "Private" means closed, not encrypted, so don't send secrets there.

Area Chat: it uses the country, state and city you pick, not GPS. Even a city narrows things down, so don't add your street, office or routine on top.

Travel Chat: others may know you're on the same train. Keep your coach, seat, ticket and boarding point to yourself.

Community and groups: posts can be seen and screenshotted by anyone. Remove names, numbers and faces before asking for advice. A group isn't a verified organisation, so leave if it starts feeling unsafe.

Games: a fun game doesn't make someone trustworthy. If it turns into talk about money, betting or sharing accounts, walk away.

9. Meeting someone offline

If you decide to meet, pick a busy public place, use your own transport and tell a friend where you'll be. Don't share your home address, and don't let anyone talk you into going somewhere private just because you've chatted before.

10. Report and block

Use Report when someone breaks the rules, threatens you, tries to scam you or shares harmful content. A clear reason helps us act faster. Reports are linked to your account on our side but never shown to the other person.

Use Block when you simply don't want to talk to someone again. You don't need to wait for things to get bad. Blocking stops the chat, but for serious abuse please report too, and contact the police if there's real danger.

11. Keep your account safe

Your ST code is like a username, fine to share. Your 4-digit PIN is not. Don't post it, send it or reuse it elsewhere. If you think someone else has your PIN or your phone, change the PIN from your account settings.

To delete your account, go to My Profile → Account & Devices → Delete My Account. Stuck? Email strangertalk.in@gmail.com.

12. Quick checklist

  • Keep it general until you trust someone.
  • Never share OTPs, passwords, PINs or bank details.
  • Keep your address and live location private.
  • Ignore urgent money requests.
  • Don't open strange links.
  • Leave chats that feel wrong.
  • Block and report abusive users.
  • Tell someone before meeting anyone offline.
  • Call emergency services if you're in danger.

13. What we can and can't do

We give you report and block tools, check reports and act on rule-breakers. But we can't know everyone's real identity or intentions, and we can't see what happens outside Stranger Talk. Staying safe works best when we both do our part.
