Anonymous Chat Guide: What It Means and What It Does Not

“Anonymous” can mean different things online. A service may hide your real name from another participant while still maintaining an internal account or session record. Understanding that difference helps you make safer choices.

What is anonymous chat?

Anonymous chat generally means you can communicate without presenting your everyday identity to the other person. It does not automatically mean that the service knows nothing about the conversation or that messages can never be associated with a session.

How Stranger Talk handles identity

Stranger Talk uses a lightweight identity based on an ST Code rather than a traditional email-and-password public profile. Community content can be presented anonymously to other users while application records can still be associated with your Stranger Talk Code.

Anonymous does not mean untraceable

Do not treat an anonymous-style interface as a guarantee of invisibility. Your own messages can reveal identity through names, workplaces, schools, locations, photographs, social handles or distinctive personal stories.

What not to share

  • passwords, OTPs or PINs;
  • banking and payment information;
  • identity documents;
  • exact home or workplace addresses;
  • live location or detailed travel movements;
  • private information belonging to another person.

Use privacy as a habit

Share less at the beginning of a conversation. Avoid combining several small details that together identify you. If you post in a community space, remember that other users can copy or share what you publish.

Anonymous versus private

Anonymous-style participation describes how your identity may be presented. Private Chat describes who can enter a particular conversation. Neither phrase should be interpreted as a promise of end-to-end encryption.

If a stranger asks for sensitive information

Say no, leave the conversation and use Block or Report when appropriate. For more practical guidance, read the Chat Safety Guide and Safety Center.
